OBEDIENCE CLASSES

Obedience demonstrates your dog's ability to follow specified routines and direction, while emphasizing the usefulness of dogs as companions to humankind. Obedience recognizes dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.

Dog and handler teams are judged on how closely they match the judge's mental picture of a "perfect performance" as they execute a series of specific exercises. Accuracy and precision is vital, but enjoyment from the dog and handler is essential. AKC has three levels of Obedience: Novice, Open, and Utility.

GCOC offers two levels of Obedience Classes for members: Foundations and Competition Obedience.

To see what classes are coming up, go to GCOC's Class Calendar & Registration.

COMPETITION OBEDIENCE CLASSES

NOVICE OBEDIENCE: FUN AND GAMES

You and your dog will learn the skills needed to compete in Novice Obedience, but not by doing rote training or doing drill after endless drill. In this course, your dog will learn to think by playing game after game. Training will be fun for you and your dog. This class will help handlers and their dogs understand and preform the Novice exercises. The class is reward-based and relies on food and toy rewards, but your dog does not need to be food crazed or toy obsessed to benefit from the class.

Prerequisite: Foundations II or equivalent skills
Length: 6 weeks

NOVICE OBEDIENCE: RING READY CLASS

The Novice Ring Ready class is designed to help handlers who have already learned the Novice exercises prepare for a trial. Proofing exercises will be used and a different venue will be used for at least once session.

Prerequisite: Novice Obedience or equivalent skills
Length: 4 weeks
