Heeling Basics:
This class is for the handler and dog team that is just getting started on heeling but it can also be for the team that is competing, needs some remedial heeling work. We will work on pivoting into heel position, set ups, finishes, first steps, extending duration of your heeling, some heeling games, turns, figure eights, changes of pace, all, while maintaining focus. If this sounds like something you need -- sign up today.
The early part of our class will review the use of a pivot disk and sit platform so everyone should have and bring these pieces of equipment:
Equipment: Disk and platform(s)
Pivot platform/disk –
1-4" tall, approximately shoulder width for the dog or width of your dog’s front stance plus a couple of inches, I prefer round, but square is ok, too. Our pivot bricks are pretty good for bigger dogs, a bit too large for little dogs. You can also use an overturned food bowl, or anything that lies flat.
Sit box/platform to start, bigger is better. Maybe use something that you can cut down in size as you progress.
Ideal size –1-2 inches high, length of your dog in a sit, about as wide as your dog’s shoulders plus an inch.
Easy, or starter size – 3 – 4 inches high, several inches wider than your dog’s shoulders, and several inches longer than your dog in a sit.
Crates are required for this class.
